HII Opens New Carrier Overhaul Workcenter at Newport News Shipbuilding

HII (NYSE: HII) and the U.S. Navy celebrated the opening of a new facility at Newport News Shipbuilding on Thursday, June 26, 2026, according to a company press release. The Carrier Refueling Overhaul Workcenter (CROW) will enhance the work environment for sailors and shipbuilders during refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, providing approximately 80,000 square feet of dedicated space near carriers undergoing RCOH. The facility includes office spaces for sailors and shipbuilders, as well as quality of service areas sailors can use while executing RCOH. It is located mid-yard at NNS, positioned between the dry dock and the outfitting pier that support RCOH work.

NNS President Kari Wilkinson called the facility a reflection of strong teamwork between the shipyard and the Navy, expressing gratitude for the persistence behind the project’s planning and execution. Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. James Kilby said the workcenter directly supports Admiral Caudle’s “Sailors First” vision for the Navy, noting that it gives sailors and shipyard partners a dedicated, modern space outside the heavy industrial environment to support their well-being and readiness.
HII owns and operates Newport News Shipbuilding and is America’s largest shipbuilder, delivering the world’s most powerful ships and all-domain mission technologies, including unmanned systems, to U.S. and allied defense customers, with a workforce of 44,000 and more than 140 years of experience advancing U.S. national security.
