The City of Newport News reports that the Newport News Fire Department’s Community Health Bus, part of the department’s broader Community Health Program, will visit the Denbigh Community Center on Thursday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents are invited to access free healthcare services and community resources without requiring an appointment. The mobile health unit offers preventive health screenings, chronic disease management support, mental and behavioral health resources, assistance accessing healthcare, and referrals to local community services. The Denbigh Community Center is located at 15198 Warwick Boulevard.
The Community Health Program takes a proactive, community-focused approach to care by expanding beyond traditional emergency response. Through coordinated initiatives such as Mobile Integrated Health, Community Paramedicine, and Community Assistance Response, the department provides accessible healthcare services, supports physical and behavioral health needs, and connects residents to essential resources. By emphasizing prevention, early intervention, and strong partnerships, these efforts aim to improve health outcomes, reduce reliance on emergency services, and strengthen the overall health, safety, and resilience of the Newport News community.
One key component of this framework is Community Assistance Response (CARe), the city’s “help first” crisis team. A crisis intervention specialist and paramedics respond together to support individuals during behavioral health and mental health emergencies, working alongside the Newport News Police Department, Fire and EMS, and community partners to stabilize situations involving mental health, substance use, homelessness, or minor medical needs. The specialist leads de-escalation and trust-building, while paramedics assess medical concerns that may present as behavioral symptoms. CARe connects individuals to treatment services, shelters, and other resources, and can facilitate voluntary transport or support Emergency Custody Order processes when needed, offering residents a path from crisis to care.
