City Center event to celebrate local culture, businesses, and community spirit

The City of Newport News invites residents and visitors alike to celebrate everything that makes the city special at the 3rd annual Made in Newport News event—Block Party Edition—on Saturday, August 16, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at City Center at Oyster Point.
This free community celebration shines a spotlight on the city’s homegrown talent, businesses, products, organizations, and attractions. With live entertainment, family-friendly activities, and a showcase of local food and drinks, the event promises an evening of high-energy fun and community pride.
A Full Lineup of Entertainment and Local Flavor
The festivities kick off with a parade-style opening performance featuring local high school bands, cheerleaders, and youth from the Warwick Little League. DJs Mixology, Wavy Dee, and Eroc will keep the party going with hits from across the decades. Dance enthusiasts can learn the city’s custom “Boots on the Ground” line dance with help from the HyDef Dance Group.
Attendees can pick up a limited-edition "Made in Newport News" clack fan during giveaways at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. (while supplies last), or bust a move on the outdoor dance floor.
Food lovers will have plenty to sample at the food truck rally, featuring favorites like Dough Haus, District 41, Smokin BBQ, Atomic Dogg, and Yanie’s Hot Kitchen. For craft beer fans, the beer garden will serve selections from 1700 Brewing, Tradition Brewing Company, and Coastal Fermentory.
Local entrepreneurs and organizations will be on hand for a small business and community showcase, and several youth sports leagues will be on site to share information about how families can get involved.
Special Appearances and Family Fun
The event will also feature celebrity meet and greets, including professional boxer Jerry “Slugger” Forrest at 5:30 p.m. and former NFL quarterback and current NSU head football coach Michael Vick at 6:00 p.m.
Families can enjoy amusement rides, face painting, and rock painting for kids of all ages.
