Newport News Seeks Community Voices for City Boards and Commissions
Residents encouraged to apply for roles that influence city policies, programs, and regional services
The City of Newport News is calling on residents and city employees to take an active role in shaping their community by applying to serve on one of the city’s many Boards and Commissions. These groups play a vital part in shaping local policies, programs, and services—offering residents a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the city's development.
More than 350 Newport News residents currently serve on nearly 45 boards, commissions, and committees that provide technical, advisory, administrative, and judicial support to the city. Some also participate in regional organizations that help guide services across Hampton Roads in areas such as healthcare, transportation, education, and recreation.
Examples include the Board of Appeals, Newport News Human Rights Commission, Peninsula Airport Commission, Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, and the Newport News Planning Commission.
How to Get Involved:
Visit the City of Newport News website and navigate to the Boards, Commissions, and Committees page.
Review the descriptions and eligibility requirements for each board.
Applicants may apply for up to three (3) boards.
Applications remain active for two years, allowing consideration for future vacancies.
The next City Council meeting to announce new appointees will take place on September 23 at the Denbigh Community Center, 15198 Warwick Blvd. Residents are encouraged to take part in this unique chance to help shape the direction of Newport News.
