Newport News Public Schools Opens Online Pre-Registration
Plus, school supply drive; HII earnings report; weekend events in the city
Newport News Public Schools has opened its Online Pre-Registration portal for the 2026-27 school year, covering all grades PreK-12. The portal allows parents and guardians to register new and returning students, with separate guidance provided for families creating a new account versus those with an existing ParentVUE login. Students already enrolled and continuing at NNPS, as well as those currently in an NNPS Pre-School program, do not need to re-register.
The OLR system allows parents and legal guardians to complete all pre-registration information from any internet-enabled device, though the district notes a laptop or desktop computer works best. Parents can save their progress and return later, register multiple children new to NNPS at the same time, upload supporting enrollment documents, and monitor the status of their submission after it is filed. The system’s screens are designed to guide parents through each required field. Every NNPS school also has a computer available on-site for families who prefer to complete pre-registration in person, and students will be pre-registered at their zoned school.
According to the city, Newport News Public Schools educates approximately 25,500 students in 40 schools: 3 early childhood centers, 24 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 5 high schools, and 1 middle/high combination school. NNPS is a community of diverse learners, with over 1,500 students who speak a language other than English. The division employs approximately 4,300 teachers, administrators, and support staff, with a mission of ensuring that all students graduate college, career and citizen-ready.
NNPS is encouraging families to register as soon as possible to help schools and teachers prepare for the first day of classes. Children who are four years old by September 30 may be eligible for the NNPS Preschool program, and children who are five by September 30 are eligible for kindergarten; a child turning five on or before September 30 is required to attend school. Families can use the NNPS School Zone Finder online, or call (757) 591-4500, to determine which elementary, middle, and high school serves their address.
Pre-registration follows three steps:
Gather required documents: a certified copy of the student’s birth certificate (or an affidavit if unavailable), two proofs of residency such as a current lease or mortgage statement and a recent utility bill, a comprehensive physical exam for Pre-K through Grade 5, immunization records, and the student’s most recent report card, withdrawal grades, or transcript for high school students. Additional documents, such as an IEP or 504 plan, custodial court order, or foster care plan, are required if applicable, and preschool applicants must submit income verification.
Complete the Online Pre-Registration: a reference guide, available in English and Spanish, walks parents through the process step by step.
Visit the child’s school: once the pre-registration is reviewed, the child’s zoned school will contact the family by phone or email to schedule an in-person visit, which is required to finalize enrollment. At that appointment, families must provide proof of identification along with any additional information the school requests. Families can use the NNPS School Zone Finder to determine which school their child is zoned for.
Virginia law requires all school-age children to be adequately immunized, and NNPS requires students entering Pre-K through 5th grade to provide a comprehensive physical exam within 12 months of enrollment. Students in grades 7-12 must show proof of Tdap and MenACWY vaccinations before starting school in August, and students with incomplete immunizations may be admitted conditionally if a completion schedule is provided.

Shipbuilders can donate at collection boxes in the shipyard or at outlying buildings, including Bldg. 888 (Brooks Crossing) at 550 30th St. from Aug. 10-12, with large-quantity pickups available Aug. 10 by contacting Corporate Citizenship. Online donations can also be made through YouGiveGoods, with additional details available on the MyNNS School Tool Drive site.
Newport News Shipbuilding Interns Complete Summer Program Newport News Shipbuilding’s interns gathered for a luncheon last week to celebrate the completion of their 10-week programs, timed with National Internship Day on July 30. Attendees heard from USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) Commanding Officer Capt. David Skarosi and Command Master Chief Michael Smith, who discussed leadership and the relationship between shipbuilders and sailors during a Q&A. Kevin Kollar, a first-year intern and Navy veteran, also took part in the discussion, saying Skarosi “drove home the importance of team and the impact that we as shipbuilders have on our sailors.”

HII Reports Strong Q2 2026 Results, Raises Shipbuilding Revenue Guidance HII announced its second quarter 2026 financial results on Wednesday, reporting revenues of $3.4 billion and net earnings of $208 million, or $5.27 per diluted share. The Newport News-based defense contractor also raised its full-year shipbuilding revenue guidance. The company increased its fiscal 2026 shipbuilding revenue guidance range to between $10.2 billion and $10.4 billion, and raised the lower end of its operating margin guidance for the year. HII reaffirmed its previously issued free cash flow outlook while continuing to deliver defense capabilities for U.S. and allied customers.
Virginia Peninsula Chamber announces LEAD Higher Class of 2027 applications The Virginia Peninsula Chamber announced that applications are now open for LEAD Higher Class of 2027, a comprehensive 12-month advanced leadership program developed in partnership with Christopher Newport University. The program is designed to cultivate leadership skills among emerging leaders in the community. The application deadline is Friday, August 21, 2026.

Sister Cities Newport News Seeks Applicants for Japan Delegation Sister Cities of Newport News announced applications for residents to serve as Citizen Diplomats on the 2026 delegation to Neyagawa, Osaka, Japan. Up to 20 residents will be selected to travel Nov. 23-Dec. 1, 2026, experiencing a homestay and cultural exchange estimated to cost approximately $2,600, with delegates covering airfare, passports, personal expenses and a required administrative fee. Applicants must be current members of Sister Cities of Newport News and agree to attend pre-travel educational sessions.
