Newport News outlines short term rental permit requirements and rules
Plus, the NNPD North Precinct reports mid-year crime stats and new rooftop solar on Peake facility

As the summer vacation season heats up, the City of Newport News reminds residents that short term rental hosts must obtain a permit to operate legally within city limits. The requirement stems from a 2022 ordinance adopted by City Council to protect neighborhood integrity and ensure public safety. Property owners interested in hosting must verify their home qualifies as their primary residence with at least 185 days of occupancy annually and accommodates no more than six lodgers with a maximum of two per bedroom.
The application process involves downloading forms from the Citizen Self Service Portal, gathering required documentation, and submitting materials to the Planning Department. Additional requirements include obtaining a business license, maintaining a guest log, paying transient occupancy tax, posting emergency exit plans in bedrooms, and installing smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers. Hosts should note that commercial gatherings, excessive noise, and simultaneous multiple rentals are prohibited. For questions or clarification on eligibility, contact Planning at 757-926-8761 or planning@nnva.gov.
