Newport News-led Coastal Virginia STEM Hub Awards Grants to 16 Programs
Almost $300K in funding sparks science and technology learning across Coastal Virginia

A major investment in the future of science and technology education is taking root across Coastal Virginia. The Coastal Virginia STEM Hub (COVA STEM Hub), founded in 2021 and based in Newport News, is awarding over $295,000 in grants to 16 organizations working to improve STEM education from early childhood through adulthood.
Established to close long-standing gaps in access to high-quality STEM instruction, the COVA STEM Hub serves communities across Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, and nearby regions. It is guided by the nationally recognized Teaching Institute for Excellence in STEM (TIES) model, which promotes equity-driven, innovative approaches to teaching STEM. Initial funding for the Hub came from the Virginia General Assembly, and its mission is supported by Virginia Peninsula Community College and a growing network of regional partners.
Part of the Hub’s strategy focuses on strengthening STEM education throughout GO Virginia Region 5 by uniting schools, businesses, libraries, museums, nonprofits, and families. The broader statewide effort is also reinforced by allies such as the Science Museum of Virginia, which promotes STEM literacy across the Commonwealth.
Newport News has taken a leading role in this initiative, with City Manager Alan K. Archer emphasizing the city’s dedication to preparing the region for a tech-forward future. “We’re not just supporting this work—we’re investing in it,” Archer said. “Through COVA STEM, we are helping build a future-ready region by creating real opportunities for today’s students and educators.”
Locally, Newport News Public Schools is driving innovation by encouraging students to think creatively and solve real-world challenges. Their integrated STEM and STEAM curriculum ensures mastery of academic standards while embedding computer science and engineering principles. Middle and high school students also have the opportunity to pursue advanced STEM coursework, providing them with a competitive edge for future careers.
Together, the regional grant funding and Newport News’ local efforts form a powerful ecosystem that nurtures STEM skills at every stage of learning. As the COVA STEM Hub continues to grow, its investments are expected to boost educational outcomes, fuel workforce development, and strengthen the economic resilience of Coastal Virginia.
