Jefferson Lab passes quality check for accelerator components
Plus, social media policy for court interactions, CNU updates

A key part of the technology that powers Jefferson Lab’s particle accelerator in Newport News has just passed a major quality check with flying colors. The lab’s Superconducting Radiofrequency (SRF) Operations department completed a three-year recertification audit, confirming that its processes continue to meet strict international quality standards. The department is part of the lab’s SRF Institute, which builds and maintains key equipment for Jefferson Lab’s own particle accelerator as well as major research facilities at other national labs, such as Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Originally certified to the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard in May 2023, this was the first full three-year recertification, following two interim annual “surveillance audits.” The certification was issued by NSF-ISR, is valid for another three years, and aligns with DOE Order 414.1E on quality assurance. Key points from the lab’s recent announcement include:
Audit result: No non-conformities found; full compliance, described as an “almost ideal” outcome by SRF quality engineer Ashley Mitchell.
Culture shift: Staff described the QMS as having become second nature over the three years (”like breathing”), no longer requiring reference materials during auditor interviews as they did initially.
Minor feedback: The auditor suggested standardizing the level of detail across written procedures so any skilled worker could follow them, even without specific prior experience on that component.

Ferguson focuses on on smart kitchens Ferguson recently posted information about their focus on connected kitchen technology that is evolving beyond simple automation. The goal is to help home cooks manage timing, one of cooking’s greatest challenges, according to the company. Brands like GE Appliances and Bosch are introducing smart systems that function as kitchen co-pilots, guiding users through recipes while automatically adjusting temperatures and cooking times across multiple appliances simultaneously.
The company asserts that these emerging connected cooking apps allow homeowners to control ovens remotely, receiving notifications and adjusting settings from their smartphones or voice assistants. Connected systems can preheat appliances, monitor cooking progress, and coordinate when different dishes will be ready. Some systems include safety features that automatically activate ventilation if excessive heat is detected, while others feature LCD displays for easy customization and real-time updates, making meal preparation more convenient and precise.
