Plus, Newsome House historical significance; hot weather business seminar and City urges water conservation

Newport News-based Ferguson announced a $100,000 investment in the Heavy Metal Summer Experience (HMSE), a national program designed to introduce young people ages 15 to 20 to careers in the skilled trades. The donation will help fund 62 hands-on summer camps across the United States and Canada, providing thousands of students with hands-on training, mentorship and professional development opportunities.
“What started as a simple idea to open doors for young people has grown into something much bigger,” Melissa Hazelwood, Director of Social Impact for Ferguson, commented in the company’s release.
Through partnership with HMSE, participants engage in immersive, project-based training hosted at local employer and contractor facilities. Students work on real construction projects, including fabricating sheet metal toolboxes, building copper pipe lamps and wiring DIY air conditioning units under the guidance of professional tradespeople.
“Ferguson’s partnership helps HMSE give students something many have never had before: the chance to see the skilled trades up close, work with their hands and imagine a future in an industry ready to welcome them,” added Ellen Young, Executive Director for Heavy Metal Summer Experience.
The program also facilitates direct connections to pre-apprenticeship programs and registered apprenticeships. The organization states that this effort supports their broader commitment to connect 50,000 young people to the skilled trades by 2030.
