Newport News to Host Public Demonstration of Drone First Responder Program
The City of Newport News will hold a community demonstration of its Drones as First Responders (DFR) program today, Wednesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at Police Headquarters, 9710 Jefferson Ave. The event will feature live drone operations and real-time aerial footage showing how the technology supports public safety response across the city.
Launched this spring, Newport News’s DFR program is among the first in Virginia and the nation to integrate drone operations across police, fire, and EMS functions. The program deploys drones in response to specific emergency calls, providing aerial visibility before ground responders arrive. City officials say the tool helps personnel assess situations more accurately, reduce uncertainty, and make better-informed decisions during active incidents.
Program guidelines define clear limits on how drones may be used. Deployments are tied exclusively to specific calls for service and are not used for general surveillance, neighborhood patrol, or continuous monitoring. Access to footage and data is restricted to authorized personnel, and all information is retained according to established legal and operational requirements rather than indefinitely.
Accountability measures include automatic logging of every flight through publicly accessible software. The city’s dashboard tracks metrics such as the number of calls responded to, response times, reductions in response time compared to traditional methods, and how often drones arrived on scene before ground units. Officials said the data is intended to help evaluate the program’s effectiveness over time.

The department’s community engagement around the technology extends beyond today’s demonstration. The Newport News Police Department’s Drone Response Unit hosted a Youth Summer Camp July 6–8 at 13010 Mitchell Point Rd., offering rising 6th through 8th graders hands-on experience with drone piloting and obstacle courses. Sponsored by the Newport News Police Foundation, the camp filled to capacity — reflecting the department’s broader effort to build public familiarity with the technology.
City officials have emphasized transparency as a central component of the program. Policies, frequently asked questions, and program details are publicly available on the city’s website, and the city has said it will continue sharing updates as the program evolves.
